Most of the clients who come to me have been trying on their own to feel better about themselves, but their strategies may not be giving them the peace they seek.
They might feel vaguely unhappy or stuck. They might be struggling with an eating disorder or body image issues; have a history of dieting and pursuing weight loss without feeling like their life is moving forward; be questioning what they feel and want for their sexuality; or be dealing with some kind of pain or health issue that is very difficult. Most of these issues are also impacting their relationships or work.
Many are suffering partly because they are at war with themselves. They can hear the debate inside their own minds between the "productive" side that is highly critical of their eating, their accomplishments, their body, etc., and the side that is being badgered (usually replying in actions rather than words).
Fortunately, people do not have to stay stuck listening to that debate. Psychotherapy allows us to create a place to explore and understand what needs to be different. They really can - and really do - make their lives better. Please visit my website at bodypositive dot com for more articles and features specifically on body image and the Health at Every Size model.
